At the Omaha Zoo in the state of Nebraska (USA), 70 American coins were removed from the stomach of the 36-year-old alligator Thibodeau. Currently, there is no threat to the animal’s health.
As reported in the zoo, they were discovered during a routine examination, which includes blood sampling and X-rays.
Foreign objects had to be removed immediately before they could harm the animal.
“We prepared Thibodeau, gave him anesthesia and a special tube that protected his mouth and allowed us to safely insert the instruments needed to extract the coins.
We also used a camera that helped us manage the process.” – said Kristina Plog, doctor of veterinary sciences and zoo veterinarian, who managed the operation.
It is reported that all the coins were successfully removed, as confirmed by x-rays. Thibodeau has recovered well from surgery and is back in his habitat.
Plog suggested that the coins were thrown into the animal’s terrarium by zoo guests, so she urges not to do so – it can be dangerous.
