A couple from Kansas (USA) has been charged with fraudulently receiving more than $215,000 in pension benefits. For this, the couple hid the body of their deceased father in the house for six years.

According to the state police, the digital records of Mike Carroll’s pacemaker show that he died in 2016 when he was 81 years old, writes the Kansas City Star. However, law enforcement officers discovered his body only in 2022 – after his son-in-law Kirk Ritter called the police to report his death, AR News adds.

The law enforcement officers began to investigate the case as “death under mysterious circumstances”, but later the forensic examination established that the man died of natural causes.

According to prosecutors, Carroll’s 61-year-old daughter and 61-year-old son-in-law received his pension while his “mummified” body lay in his own bed at home.

Family members said that in the 1990s, the Ritters moved into the house that Carroll bought with his wife. They were financially dependent on their father and took care of him in the last years of his life.

Relatives add that the couple constantly invented various excuses why Mike Carroll could not be reached or visited.

The Ritters will appear in federal court on February 2 to face charges on several counts.

It will be recalled that the British man kept his friend’s body in the freezer for two years. The man explained his act by the fact that he was “struck by grief” and did not want to let it go.
