Clayton and Carrie Lowe from Pittsburgh (USA) withdrew $4,000 from a savings account and put the cash on the kitchen table. But the money disappeared – it was eaten by their seven-year-old dog Cecil.

According to the Washington Post, on December 8, Clayton withdrew money to pay for the work of the masters who installed the fence. The man returned home with a sealed envelope containing $100 and $50 bills and placed it on the kitchen counter.

Within 30 minutes, Clayton Lowe saw tiny pieces of chewed-up bills strewn across the floor.

He shouted: “Cecil ate 4 thousand dollars!” I ran in, thinking I had misheard him. But when I saw the mess, there were no doubts. We looked at each other and said, “What are we going to do?” – recalls Kerry Lowe.

Meanwhile, Cecil was dozing on the couch in the living room. The couple says the 7-year-old goldendoodle was quite docile until they had a child.

“He’s never done anything wrong before, so we were more shocked than angry“, says Clayton.

The couple went to the vet and asked what to do with the dog, but the doctor assured them that as long as the dog eats, drinks and goes to the toilet, everything is fine.

Restoration of bills

Clayton and Carrie decided to save at least some money. They collected torn bills and made about 1.5 thousand dollars out of them.

Carrie called the bank and told the manager what had happened.

I felt like a kid saying, “The dog ate my homework.” I was surprised when they said that this was not an isolated incident.”she said.

The manager explained that the bank will accept any notes that, after being glued, have complete serial numbers visible on the front and back of the notes.

“Cecil was sitting on the sofa at that time, he still had about 2.5 thousand dollars in him and we knew there was only one way to get this money back”– said Kerry.

That same evening, Cecil threw up several torn hundreds. However, the couple had to be patient to wait for the rest of the bills.

“Money laundering

Clayton donned a mask and gloves, took plastic bags, and for the next two days accompanied Cecil as he defecated in the yard.

The couple then sifted through dog droppings and washed the torn pieces of bills with detergent.

I never thought that I would tell how I laundered money. But everything happens for the first time“, Kerri jokes.

But the Low couple did not waste their optimism and sense of humor in this situation. In this way, they managed to return another 1,800 US dollars, so the total amount of saved banknotes reached 3,500 dollars.

Kerry plans to send the washed-up pieces of bills they were unable to collect to the Treasury Department. The woman hopes that the agency will return at least part of the amount.

If not, the couple is willing to pay that price for the family history they will pass on to their son.

“We saved one of the torn bills to create a piece of art to commemorate the situation. But it is unlikely that we will ever forget it.”– added Carrie.
