In Ukraine, half of Christians have a positive attitude to the transition to the New Julian calendar – survey

50% of Christians in Ukraine consider the transition to the New Julian calendar a positive step, and 15% have a negative attitude towards it.

This is evidenced by the survey data of the Razumkov Center.

Half of Ukrainians who consider themselves Christians support the decision of Ukrainian churches – Orthodox and Greek Catholic – to switch to the New Julian calendar.

15% of respondents have a negative attitude to such a step. 14% answered that they did not care, 9% did not understand what it meant, and another 11% hesitated to answer.

82% of the faithful of the UGCC have a positive attitude to this decision, and 5% have a negative attitude. Among the faithful of the OCU, 62% support the transition, and 11% do not.

The share of supporters of the calendar change among survey participants who called themselves “just Orthodox” was 24%, and another 23% were against it.

21% of respondents who consider themselves “just Christians” supported the transition to another church calendar, while 9% did not.

Among believers of the UOC (MP), the situation was radically different: only 20.5% of them support the decision of the OCU and UGCC, while 61% of people have a negative attitude towards it.

35% of Christians answered that they celebrate Christian holidays according to the New Julian calendar, 28% – according to the Julian calendar (old style), 27% – differently, depending on the circumstances. Another 3% of respondents do not celebrate Christian holidays, and 7% hesitated to answer.

Among the faithful of the UGCC, 80% celebrate Christian holidays according to the New Julian calendar, 9.5% – depending on the circumstances (New Julian or Julian), 7% – only according to the Julian calendar. Among the faithful of the OCU, the percentage ratio was as follows: 39%, 27% and 27.5%, respectively.

Most of those who celebrate Christian holidays according to the New Julian calendar live in the Western region (66% of respondents). The least is in Skhidny (20%).

The survey was conducted from November 9 to 15, 2023. A total of 2,022 respondents over the age of 18 living in all regions controlled by Ukraine were interviewed by the method of personal interviews. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%.
