Archaeologists have discovered 124 medieval stone, ceramic and metal artifacts in the smallest town of Melnik in southwestern Bulgaria.
A fragment of the medieval inscription of the church and a marble slab with seraphim, which were discovered during excavations in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, were a special find, writes Arkeonews.
Scientists say that these “treasures” will help them look into the medieval life of this Bulgarian town.
What’s more, if after such finds little Melnyk becomes a tourist town, it will get a new life.

In total, scientists found more than a hundred medieval and early modern items, but two finds in particular stood out from the rest.
This is a fragment of a medieval inscription of the 13th-14th centuries and a fragment of a marble relief plate of the 18th or early 19th century with the image of seraphim (in Christianity, six-winged angels closest to God).
The ancient inscription gave scientists more information about the initial stage of the church’s construction, and the marble fragment once again showed the artistic and religious traditions of that time.

The church under study was built in two stages: the first – from the ΥΙΙΙΙ – ΥIV centuries, and the second – from the middle of the 19th century.
First, the team opened the floor and examined the apse of the church – the semicircular projection of the building; altar part of Christian churches.
It turned out that in the XIII-XIV centuries. the church was 17.35 m long and had one apse. Then the restorers worked on removing the layer of frescoes from this period.
The National Archaeological Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said that some of the frescoes were saved, although they were broken into pieces.
