“Invaders like fairy-tale midgets”: the story of a National Guardsman with the call sign “Gulliver”

A military serviceman with the call sign “Gulliver”, who serves in the 5th Slobozhan Brigade, is used to being the tallest among his brothers. The man chose his pseudonym not only because of his height – the war for him is like “Gulliver’s Travels” surrounded by midgets from Jonathan Swift’s novel, the National Guard says. “The occupiers, fairy-tale midgets, are evil creatures without honor and conscience,” says the military man. In the 5th Slobozhan Brigade of the National Guard, they say that Yuriy (the real name of the soldier) is a machine gunner. The man graduated from a vocational school as an auto mechanic, but did not have time to work in his profession, because he was drafted into the army. “In the 90s, I served as a conscript in military unit 3027, the Bars special unit. It was then an analogue of the National Guard. So, you can say that I was standing at the origins of NSU,” Gulliver laughs, adding that “the army changed forever his life”. After the army, the man worked for 5 years in a pre-trial detention center, then as a storekeeper and in a foundry at the Kharkiv Tractor Plant. “The work was hard, harmful, but they paid well,” says “Gulliver”. In 2014, the man volunteered to go to the front, but due to a leg injury he received at the factory, he was enrolled “in reserve”. Before the full-scale invasion, Yuriy lived in Kharkiv on Northern Saltivka. When the district began to suffer from Russian rockets, the man took his family out and went to the “military commissary” (territorial center of recruitment and social support). “I had a good military education, so this time they took me without question. Three “zeros” are already behind me: Balaklia, Kupyansk, Kreminna… It is difficult, but we hold our positions. Fear is present, but there are things more important than it. We must understand , for which we have gathered here, we are not a club based on interests, we are doing a common cause. If we all give up, then there will be no country. We must hide our fear. We stand for the future of Ukraine! Let it be!” – says Yuriy. The man adds that after Ukraine’s victory in the war, he dreams of returning to his previous job, where there is a place for him. The soldier is looking forward to meeting his family. “I have a wife and three children. I have a short wife, by the way. Gulliver and Thumbelina. Such is our happiness,” the man says with a smile.
