Shane McGowan, the former lead singer of the Celtic punk band The Pogues, has died at the age of 65 after a long illness. His wife announced this on Instagram on Thursday. “He will always be the light that I hold in front of me, the measure of my dreams and the love of my whole life, the most beautiful soul and a beautiful angel, the sun and the moon, the beginning and the end of everything that is dear to me,” said Victoria Mary Clark.

The singer recently suffered from encephalitis, which required hospital treatment, the BBC reports.

McGowan’s press secretary said in a statement that he “passed away peacefully at 3:30 a.m. on November 30, with his wife and sister by his side.”

In 2018, at his 60th anniversary celebration at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, McGowan received an award for his contribution to popular music.

In 2020, a documentary film about his life was released – Crock Of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan.

He was a close friend of Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who died in July of this year.
