Gray hair can appear at any age for a number of reasons. But there is a myth that you can’t pull out gray hairs – then the gray hair will supposedly spread even more.

“UP.Zhyttia” investigated whether this myth is true with Nataliya Zhenzheruhya, a dermatovenerologist of the “Dobrobut” medical network.

Why gray hair occurs

Hair pigmentation is one of the most unique features of a person – it can be black, brown, light or red. The color is determined by the pigment melanin.

There are also people who do not have this pigment at all – they suffer from albinism.

If a sufficient amount of melanin stops being produced in the hair bulb, the hair will turn gray. After all, when there are not enough melanocytes in the hair follicle, the pigment will not be formed.” notes doctor Natalya Zhenzherukha.

Melanin can be destroyed over time or under the influence of various physiological processes, including:

  • genetic predisposition to gray hair;
  • hormonal disorders of the endocrine system, such as thyroid disease or diabetes;
  • suffered serious diseases, including infections;
  • disorders of the mental sphere – severe nervous tension, nervous disorders, etc.

According to the study, the rate of graying is also affected by smoking, autoimmune diseases or heart disease.

Scientists from India have investigated that deficiency of vitamins B12, D3 and calcium may be associated with premature graying of hair. In the case of a lack of vitamins, there may be a difference in the color of the hair – for example, lighter areas near the root or at the ends.

Can you pull out gray hair?

The specialist notes that pulling out gray hairs is possible, but not desirable. However, if you pull out one gray hair, 10 more hairs will definitely not grow in its place.

“Pulling out a gray hair does not cause new discolored hair to appear. The surrounding hair will not turn white until the pigment cells of its own follicles die.

When you pluck a hair, a new one will grow in its place, and since the pigment cells no longer produce pigment, this new hair will also be white.”she explains.

Experts at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences advise against plucking or pulling out gray hairs, as this can injure the hair follicle and lead to infection, ingrown hairs, scarring or possibly baldness.

The dermatovenerologist added that it is worth paying attention not only to the gray hair in the scalp, but also to the hair on the body.

“The whole human body is covered with hair, but it differs in structure, density, etc. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to gray hair not only on the head.

Men may develop gray areas on their chest or back at an early age (it is not about one or two hairs). This indicates disorders or diseases of internal organs”– added the specialist.

Natalia Zhenzherukha also explained that there are no cosmetic products that can stop the graying process.

Hair that has lost its natural pigment can be dyed or tinted, or accept its gray hair.
