Ukrainian defenders will be able to store germ cells in cryobanks free of charge, so that in case of injuries related to reproductive functions, there will be an opportunity to continue the family.
On December 21, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed the corresponding bill No. 8011.
The law applies to National Guardsmen, SBU employees, and police officers performing official duties in combat zones.
According to the explanatory note to the law, the goal is to create state guarantees regarding the preservation of the possibility of biological parenthood or motherhood, that is, free storage of germ cells in hospitals.
It is noted that the cost of sperm collection is about 450 hryvnias for men and about 1,425 hryvnias for women.
Financing will be done at the expense of the state.
“The necessary medical examinations before the collection of cells from healthy citizens can be carried out during the general examination of the military medical commission”the document says.
The law provides for free storage of biological material for 5 years.
Currently, the system of state cryobanks is not developed in Ukraine, so they must be created first.
The bill also prohibits the sale of biomaterial, as it is considered the nation’s gene pool.
