Joining of Tavrya University to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy as part of the modernization of the higher education network postponed because of his Crimean origin.

About this told Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi in an interview for “Ukrainian Pravda. Life”.

Tavria University is the only higher education institution from Crimea that moved due to the occupation. Since 2016, it has been located in Kyiv.

“The reason (why the MES postponed the decision to merge Tavriyskyi with Mohylyanka – ed.) was not a hyperactive protest, but complex consultations with various communities, in particular Crimean ones; with the Vice Prime Minister for the Reintegration of the Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk and a number of other politicians regarding the appropriateness liquidation of the brand itself”, – said Lisovyi.

When making the decision, the Ministry of Education and Culture took into account the Crimean origin of the university.

“Taking into account the political context and what manipulations this decision could be overgrown with, we gave the opportunity to work for a year and form a strategy that would really show them as a Crimean university.” – explained the minister.

According to him, today it is impossible to call Tavria University “Crimean”. It does not train specialists for Crimea and its de-occupation, Crimean studios do not fully work there and Crimean Tatar topics are not developed.

“After a year, we will return to the question and see – Tavriyskyi is really a Crimean university or just one of the small, weak universities in Kyiv, which closes the rankings.” – added Lisovyi.

We will remind, at the beginning of 2024 the government had intentions eliminate Volodymyr Vernadskyi Tavri National University and join it to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy National University.

However, on February 3, after a public confrontation, at a meeting of the Ministry of Education and Culture decided remove this issue from the agenda by the end of 2024.

During the introductory campaign of the Ministry of Education and Culture suspended the process of university unification.
