Pop singer and composer Toto Cutugno died in Italy at the age of 80. ANSA agency reported that Coutugno had been ill for a long time and had recently been hospitalized due to worsening condition.
The singer’s full name is Salvatore Cutugno. Success came to him in the mid-1970s, when his songs were performed by the luminary of French pop, Joe Dassen. Such hits as “Et si tu n’existais pas”, “Salut” and “L’Été indien” belong to Coutugno. Other stars – Adriano Celentano, Mireille Mathieu, Dalida – also performed Cutugno’s songs.
In 1980, Coutugno won the competition in San Remo, and in the following years, he repeatedly won prizes there. The competition in San Remo was broadcast on television and radio in the USSR, and Cutugno gained great popularity among Soviet listeners in the 1980s. His hits “L’italiano” and “Serenata” were well known to Soviet pop fans. Coutunyo repeatedly came with concerts to the USSR and, subsequently, to Russia and the post-Soviet countries.
