One of the most famous Polish directors, screenwriter, writer and rector of the Warsaw Film School died at the age of 92 Janusz Majewski.

For many years, Majewski was the president of the Association of Cinematographers and participated in the affairs of the Polish film community. According to Suspilne Kultura, in 2018 he supported the appeal of the European Film Academy to protect a Ukrainian director imprisoned in Russia Oleg Sentsov.

Majevsky was born in Lviv in 1931, when the city was part of Poland. When the boy was 7 years old, he saw Walt Disney’s “Snow White” for the first time, and after that he became interested in cinema.
After World War II, the Majewski family moved to Krakow. Janusz studied architecture at the Krakow University of Technology, and also graduated from the State Higher School of Cinema and Theater in Łódź. During 1983-1990, he was the chairman of the Council of the Association of Polish Cinematographers, and in 2006 he became the president of the Association.

The film was the debut for the artist “Avatar, or Exchange of Souls”, which he created in 1964. Janusz Majewski worked as a director for over 60 years, during which time he experimented with genres.
“I always tried to break out of the closed circle. I did not want to become a specialist in a certain genre, I preferred to look for something new, to overcome new obstacles. I have always tried to make the best possible film. I was fascinated by its very essence as a spectacle of images, but also of sound, a spectacle that is an alloy of many elements – literature, acting, visual arts, etc. Cinema as a conglomerate of many arts“, he said in an interview with SFP’s Film Magazine.
Among his most famous films: “Jealousy and medicine“, “Imperial-Royal Deserters”, “A lesson in a dead language”, “The criminal who stole the crime”, “Locis. Manuscript of Professor Wittembach”, “Hotel Pacific”, “Gold of deserters” and “Black Mercedes”.
His last film was a documentary “Jazz Outsider2022 – a tape about jazz music.
