A draft law was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada, in which it is proposed to introduce the term “esoteric education”, to create a register of “specialists” in this field and to collect taxes from them.

The corresponding draft law is posted on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

On November 24, the draft law “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Education” Regarding the Introduction of Legal Regulation of Relations in the Field of Esoteric Education” was presented to the deputies for review. Its author is Serhii Hryvko, a member of the “Servant of the People” party.

“Taking into account the active dissemination of esoteric knowledge and thoughts among the population, the growing popularity of using esoteric services, as well as the presence in scientific circles of direct discussions and justifications regarding the expediency of applying esoteric teachings in human life – esoterics has actually become a separate field of employment in society, as well as a direction education”, – substantiates the expediency of the draft law of the People’s Deputy.

Hryvko emphasizes that anyone can now call himself an “esoteric” without having the appropriate “knowledge”. Thanks to this, they earn by “deceiving people”. At the same time, according to him, the activities of “virtuous esotericists” are not protected in any way.

In addition, the people’s deputy believes that the state itself, which does not receive taxes from this type of activity, is “deceived”.

Among the “esoteric directions”, the deputy proposes to single out the following:

  • astrology;
  • tarology;
  • numerology;
  • runology;
  • extrasensory perception;
  • quackery;
  • healing;
  • yoga;
  • other areas of spiritual, energetic and physical practices.

Changes proposed by the draft law:

  • to introduce the term “esoteric education” – “a person’s acquisition of knowledge and information intended for a limited circle of persons, which contain elements alternative to generally accepted scientific concepts”;
  • grant “esoterics” the status of a natural person-entrepreneur or self-employed person;
  • create a Register of mentors in the field of esoteric education, for inclusion in which it will be necessary to pay an administrative fee in the amount of one minimum salary every year;
  • grant esotericists included in the Register the right to conduct trainings, courses, and issue diplomas to their students;
  • allow the creation of special educational institutions – schools, institutes and academies of esotericism.

This “esoteric bill” will be sent to the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Education, Science and Innovation.

Pseudoscience of esotericism

We note that all the listed “esoteric” directions are not provable and are considered pseudosciences. However, some people tend to believe in such magical practices.

In particular, according to media expert Oksana Moroz, according to a survey by the Institute of Sociology, in 2018 Ukrainians trusted astrologers more than the government.

The specialist noted that “esotericists” manipulate the feelings of people who are looking for a certain point of support in them. This problem is especially sensitive during war, which is the cause of emotional instability.

The main signs of pseudoscience:

  • instead of explaining the mechanism of work, he appeals to “higher powers”;
  • uses dogmatic statements and looks for cause-and-effect relationships based on the “similarity” of certain phenomena;
  • does not accept alternative theories;
  • uses theories that do not have concrete evidence and require additional explanations;
  • has no development and new discoveries.

Why do people believe in pseudoscience?

  • Ease of information falsification.
  • Exploiting the Barnum Effect – Giving vague descriptions or predictions that can apply to anyone.
  • Biased confirmation – a person deliberately looks for evidence of a certain thesis.

We will remind you that earlier we wrote that the Verkhovna Rada registered a draft law proposing that the state pay tuition for students who agree to voluntarily mobilize to the army.
