In Lviv, doctors removed the man’s affected lung without opening the chest. 66-year-old Mykhailo had only one incision 6 centimeters long.

As told in the Lviv Oncology Regional Treatment and Diagnostic Center, pover a year ago the patient chest pains and shortness of breath began to bother me.

According to Mr. Mykhailo, his heart was treated for more than eight months, and cancer was suspected only when the man became worse.

In the Lviv cancer center, a man was diagnosed with stage II right lung cancer.

“The patient received preoperative chemotherapy, after which the tumor in the lungs decreased by 30%. Then, to remove the tumor, he had to undergo surgery.

Since the patient’s neoplasm had spread to the main bronchus, it was necessary to remove the entire right lung”, – says Ihor Gipp, head of the thoracic department.

According to doctors, pulmonectomy (lung removal) is a very traumatic operation for the patient. After such surgical interventions, patients experience pain syndrome for a long time, so in order to reduce surgical trauma, the team decided to remove the lung videothoracoscopically – with the help of video cameras.

“We made a six-centimeter incision, inserted a special flexible port, and through it inserted a video camera and working tools to remove the tumor and work with the vessels.

Since the lung had a tumor, it was very important not to damage it during the operation and to remove it whole from the body. To do this, we placed her in a special bag, which was pulled through the port”, – Igor Hipp explained.

Doctors explain: such operations have many advantages for patients. In particular, they do not need to use as many painkillers as during open operations.

Mr. Mykhailo believes that he will completely overcome the disease. He admits: he once did not find time for examination, “he smoked a lot – sometimes a pack of cigarettes, or even two a day.” Now he promises to make amends, because he got a chance for a new life.
