Ukrainian teachers need relief from additional work – heaps of paper work, writing reports, filling out paper and electronic journals, preparing students for participation in competitions, photo reports from school events, etc. According to educators, additional employment is not always paid and often takes up all free time after work. The corresponding survey among teachers was conducted by “New Ukrainian School”. Most often, teachers indicated the simultaneous filling of electronic and paper journals, and in second place – “excess paper work”. “Teachers mentioned writing various reports (on educational work, on self-education, half-term reports of the internal evaluation system, annual report on methodical work, etc.) and collecting data for them, writing characteristics, protocols from pedrads, instruction (for example, from “Life Safety and Protection Filling in students’ personal files, keeping logs of observation and life safety, writing lesson notes, weekly educational activities during breaks or after all lessons, submitting educational activity notes, etc., the study says. Also, teachers often mentioned the organization or preparation of students to participate in various competitions, Olympiads, National Academy of Sciences, subject weeks and transporting students to the appropriate venues, etc. Educators reported that information about activities is often sent with the mark “To be completed” by local departments of education, although they are not part of the school’s annual work plan. “At the same time, local departments of education and administration often require mandatory photo and video reports from the teachers of the events,” says NUS. Educators spend a lot of time working with schoolchildren who study abroad: they make plans, consult schedules, and conduct control tests, which mostly take place after classes. Also, some of the interviewed teachers develop tasks for students on family and external forms of education. Teachers are additionally burdened by constant meetings and pedagogies, participation in school methodical associations and writing reports, reports, protocols, and work plans for them. Some of the interviewees also mentioned managing the school website, social networks of the educational institution, maintaining PCs for students and teachers, maintaining video surveillance systems in schools, being on duty at school during breaks, on the floor or in the dining room. Also, teachers are sometimes forced to independently collect money from students for food, make repairs in the classroom, and participate in “Saturdays”. “According to the results of the survey, the teachers said that they spend almost all of their free time (during breaks or after work) on all these occupations,” says NUS. For example, educators spend 30-60 minutes a day on filling out journals, 30-90 minutes on checking papers/workbooks, and about an hour on one check of practical or laboratory work of one class. It takes 2-3 hours a day for 2-3 weeks before the Olympics to prepare students for the Olympiads, and accompanying students to competitions or Olympiads can take 6-7 hours. Educators spend up to 1.5 hours once a month to prepare a speech at a parent-teacher conference or parent-teacher meeting, and 2-3 hours a week to collect information and write a report. What do educators ask from the Ministry of Education and Culture? In the NUSH survey, some teachers noted that they would like such help from the Ministry of Education and Culture and local education departments: reduce the amount of documentation and reporting (in particular, do not require photo and video reports of all events); to create a single digital database of students and teachers so that all the necessary information is in one place, such as various certificates, report cards, personal files, etc.; that the work of the educational institution takes place in accordance with the annual work plan, which is approved at the meeting; reduce the number of letters from education authorities with the stamp “Terminovo” (some teachers feel that local education authorities simply transfer their responsibility for reporting to teachers); conduct contests and Olympiads at the will of students, not under compulsion; to pay for work on weekends, when teachers take children to district or regional olympiads, work on the jury; to introduce the position of system administrator for the maintenance of IT offices, teachers’ and students’ PCs, video surveillance systems and other technical issues at the school; provide technical means and didactic materials; to provide group classes of the teaching staff with psychologists.
