An employee of the “Khortytsia” National Reserve, a scientist from Zaporizhzhia, a researcher of the history of the Mennonites (a medieval Christian Protestant movement) died at the front. Maxim Statsky.

The death of the 35-year-old scientist was reported by his wife Daria Shtastska in his Facebook.

“There are no details and there won’t be yet…on February 12, 2024, you left us“, she wrote.

They also wrote about the scientist’s death in Facebook Khortytsia National Reserve, where Statskyi worked before the war.

“There is another huge hole in our team and in our hearts. Unlimited honor and respect for the Hero on the shield. Condolences to the family and loved ones“, the message of the reserve says.

Maxim Statsky graduated from the Faculty of History of the Zaporizhia National University in 2010. He worked as a researcher at the Khortytsia National Reserve. Researched the history of German Mennonites.

In 2019, he led an expedition during which it was possible to find about 300 fragments of tombstones from the destroyed Mennonite cemetery in the foundation of an old storehouse in Verkhnia Khortytsia. Then the finds were restored and the Memorial of the Khortytsk Mennonites was opened in 2021.

Statsky is also involved in one more find – a memorial pedestal to the first Mennonite settlers. It was installed in 1890, in 1943 it disappeared, and in 2021 it was found by scientists.

During Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Statskyi served in the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He had the call sign “Historian”.

“Six months of war. Yes, you look at many things differently. But the most important difficulty – to remain oneself. It is elementary to say “You”, “thank you”, “I’m sorry” and so on. And it is not easy. It is not easy to stay above the waterline of simplification and coarsening… War is a war. These are solid competitions at a village wedding. Stupid, but necessary. Like a carousel, fun, but still boring. But no one but us, right?” – Maksym Statsky wrote in October 2023.
