The seventh international film festival “Kyiv Critic’s Week”, which will be held on October 12-18, announced the program of the international retrospective. Read UP.Culture in Telegram This year it will be called “Man with a film camera” and will combine six films about those who make films and those who watch them. Among them are films by Paul Thomas Anderson, Tim Burton, Billy Wilder and other famous directors. The hero of the poster of the program of the international retrospective was the cinematographer from the dramatic comedy “Farewell, Dragon Inn” (2003). This film by Taiwanese director Tsai Mingliang tells the story of the last screening of an old movie theater that is closing down forever. Still from the movie “Farewell, Dragon Inn” Also in the program is the movie “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) by Billy Wilder, which is considered a masterpiece of the noir genre. It is a dark and ironic reflection on the Hollywood of the time with its flaws. The story of an ambitious but unsuccessful young screenwriter and an actress who was a silent film star but later became forgotten unfolds before the viewer. A frame from the movie “Sunset Boulevard” The dramatic thriller “Through the Gap” (1960) by the British director Michael Powell tells the story of a serial killer who uses a film camera for his crimes – this is how he captures the expression of horror on the faces of his victims. Today, the film is considered one of the best British films, however, after its release, it was received so negatively that the director did not make another film in his homeland. Still from the film “Through the Crack” Another film from the program is the comedy “Ed Wood” (1994) directed by Tim Burton, which tells the story of a man who gained fame as “the worst director of all time.” Despite the fact that everyone around tried to stop him, he became an unforgettable cinematographer, although not known for his skill. In the center of the film’s plot is Wong Karwai’s favorite, movie star Maggie Chun, who plays herself. She agrees to come to France to shoot the film, but the trip turns into a comedy of errors and cultural clashes. The main character – a guy named Eddie, who suddenly gets a chance to become a porn star – was filmed in the era of breaking times, when the availability of video cameras and home video changes porn cinemas. Still from the film “Nights in the Boogie Style” About the festival Kyiv Critics’ Week is an international art film festival curated by Ukrainian film critics: co-founder of the Union of Film Critics of Ukraine, critic, editor Daria Badior, film expert and director, head of the scientific program department of the Dovzhenko Center Stanislav Bytyutky, film critic Serhiy Ksaverov and film critic, lecturer of the course on film at the “Cultural Project” Anna Datsyuk. In 2023, the festival will take place for the eighth time – it will last from October 12 to 18 and will traditionally be held in the “October” cinema. Anna Stan was depicted on this year’s poster.
