The shock period of the first months of the great war has already ended: people have realized that there is no need to postpone life for later. Bride and groom are not waiting for better times to legitimize their relationship. This is evidenced by the record number of registered marriages in 2022: almost 104,000 in the first half of the year alone, which is 21% more than in the same period in 2021. But there is a nuance: in the case when one of the partners takes the surname of the other, this touching and happy event in the life of the newlyweds entails “bureaucratic quests” regarding the replacement of documents. We share practical advice on changing your last name. Plan a visit to the passport service in advance. Changing the surname or not is a personal matter for everyone. There is no legal requirement for this. However, you should think about it in advance, because if you decided to keep your last name when registering the marriage, and changed your mind after the birth of the child, this will complicate the process. If you decide to take your partner’s last name, you have one month to change your passport. I recommend not delaying the process, because using an invalid passport leads to a fine – from UAH 1,342 to UAH 4,026. To replace your passport, contact the National Center for National Statistics or any convenient paid passport service. You can replace your passport free of charge at Tsnap. I advise you to sign up there immediately after submitting an application to the DRATS before registering a marriage. Because of the queues, I could issue the document no earlier than a month after the marriage, so I was forced to contact a paid passport service. What documents need to be replaced First of all, it is necessary to change the passport of a citizen of Ukraine. The order of replacement of other documents is not essential. It is also necessary to update the document regarding the registration number of the taxpayer’s registration card (RNOKPP). The number remains unchanged, but you will receive a card with a new name. This can be done at any tax office in your area in five minutes. It is also necessary to change the driver’s license and personal data in institutions. After updating the passport and tax number, contact the bank and inform about the change of data. Separately, with a similar request, it is necessary to contact the medical institutions that have your registration cards. It will be necessary to re-sign the declaration with the family doctor. If you have insurance policies (health, life, auto, real estate, etc.), don’t forget to contact the appropriate insurance brokers as well. What should you have with you when changing your name? I recommend that you have all your documents with you, especially if you received your passport in a territory that is currently temporarily occupied. Currently, there is no connection with the passport offices of the non-controlled territories, so it is important to take as many documents as possible to confirm the identity of the applicant. Among them can be a driver’s license, tax number, birth certificate, foreign passport, educational documents (certificates, diplomas), employment book and all other documents that have your photo. When to change your foreign passport If you have a foreign passport, prepare to change it immediately. Postpone “until better times”, unfortunately, will not work. In the passport service, both domestic and foreign passports are replaced at the same time. Then, you can apply for a name change only if the previous document is lost. Beware of air alarms It is impossible to get used to air alarms. How to plan things in exact timing. All service centers and TsNAP are closed during an alarm and visitors are asked to take shelter. So a situation may arise when the air alarm will sound just before your visit to the administrator, and the strike will be already at the end of the working day. Safety is an absolute priority. Therefore, calculate your time and mentally prepare for the fact that the process of submitting an application for a passport change will take more than one day. How to change the name of the FOP First you need to revoke the old electronic signature (KEP), get a new one and go to the tax office with it and send form F1300204. Then the new KEP will be saved in the database and attached to your account. After that, go to the Diya portal. Fortunately, making changes to the FOP through Diya is the fastest and most painless procedure of all of the above. When using the service, the system offers to change the last name. Check all the data, specify the information and feel free to send the application. Usually, within an hour, a response to the changes will be sent to your e-mail, and you will be able to download an updated extract from the Unified State Register (USR).
