National Guardsman Oleksandr with the call sign “Viter” in civilian life was a teacher of higher mathematics at the university. Now he is the commander of the division of the rifle battalion. The National Guard of Ukraine told the story of the fighter. When he was still young, after his military service in Chernivtsi, Oleksandr entered the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin. He loved mathematics, was interested in it since childhood, so the subject was always easy for him. That is why I chose it for my future profession. Oleksandr with the call sign “Wind”. Photo: National Guard of Ukraine After graduating from university, he worked as a teacher of advanced mathematics. Later – deputy dean of several faculties. Oleksandr has been fighting since 2014. Then the man was mobilized for temporary service, after which he returned to work at the university. On February 26, 2022, he already joined the army as a volunteer. “If your country is attacked, every real man must defend it. My country will not live under the enemy!” – emphasizes “Wind”. Photo: National Guard of Ukraine From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Oleksandr and his comrades followed the movements of the enemy columns, guided the artillery, which worked according to the specified military coordinates. This helped to trap the enemy when he tried to approach Kharkiv. “Viter” also took part in the de-occupation of Kharkiv region. “(Already) during the counteroffensive, our group joined the battalion, here the spectrum of tasks was already wider: both reconnaissance, and assaults, and sweeps. I do not count roadblocks and the protection of objects – this is rest, compared to the rest,” he adds Oleksandr “Viter” with a combat brigade made its way from Kharkiv to the forests near Kreminna, and in Pidlyman he was wounded by the occupiers. Photo: National Guard of Ukraine He, like thousands of other soldiers, had to be on the verge of death, but, fortunately, he was saved by his bulletproof vest. “We had a task to enter and clear the village, we were ambushed. The side of the Tempovsky (armored vest brand – auto.) armor was saved, the bullet “slipped”, but only the core entered the body. They patched it up, he was cured and returned to his people to fight again, what’s going on here tell?” says the commander. The commander gave him the call sign. Scientists are given “armor” in their position, but here is my armor,” says Viter and points to his bulletproof vest. The National Guardsman jokes that he used to manage the faculty and taught higher mathematics, but now he gives orders to the divisions of the rifle battalion – “he already teaches them from life experience.” He sees commonalities in civilian life and at the front, but the responsibility in war, in his opinion, is much greater. The national guard believes that mathematics teaches thinking and structuring thoughts, as well as establishing cause-and-effect relationships, and therefore finding the simplest solution. “Mathematical mindset helps in war to build the correct algorithms for executing combat orders. How to take the defensive, how to defend yourself. To carry out the order, and to do it in the most optimal way. We still have mathematicians fighting in our battalion, by the way, they are my former students,” – says Oleksandr. The place where the Wind fought. The fighter did not see his family for a year and a half, because he convinced them to go abroad. “My daughter and wife are proud of me, they support me. So, after the Victory, I will definitely return to my family and my profession. The war is not forever. We are fighting and I will continue to teach my students,” Viter adds.
