Sociologists determined that during the war, Ukrainians began to watch Ukrainian films more often: 33% of respondents watch them regularly. This is evidenced by a study of media consumption conducted by the Gradus Research company in March 2023. “Ukrainian cinema is going through exceptional times: two Ukrainian hits at Cannes at the box office, and another one from the Venice festival. The trend for all things Ukrainian, reinforced by the war, did not bypass the film industry either.” , say sociologists. If before the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 29% of the surveyed Ukrainians regularly watched Ukrainian films, now the number of connoisseurs of domestic cinema has increased to a third (33%). This growth occurred, in particular, due to the transfer of those who watched Ukrainian films occasionally to those who watch them regularly. For comparison, before the full-scale invasion, 59% of Ukrainians sometimes watched domestic films, and now – 50%. At the same time, only 14% reported that they do not consume such content. This medium is mostly preferred by viewers aged 55-60. Only 14% of respondents go to offline cinemas, which can be explained both by the difficult security situation in the country and less accessibility. At the same time, cinemas are particularly popular among young people – the share of Ukrainians aged 18-24 who usually watch Ukrainian films in cinemas is almost three times larger than the sample as a whole (41% versus 14%).
