A military man and writer, the author of the diary novel “Quiet Night” died at the front Maxim Petrenko. He was considered missing for a long time. This was reported by a book reviewer Anna Skorina.

“The death was confirmed. Maxim Petrenko – defender, writer, popularizer of reading, activist in the promotion of libraries, sincere, deep, attentive to details, this is how I will remember him“, the writer wrote on social networks Valentina Zakhabur.

The singer, leader of the band Zwyntar, also reacted to the death of the writer Sasha Cemetery: “Our friend, who starred with us in the series about the commissar and the underdogs, was killed by the Russians. He went missing last summer, but we believed he was alive, just in captivity. But Max died. Farewell, my friend“.

Maxim Petrenko before the war, he worked as a programmer and taught at the Institute of Computer Technologies of the University “Ukraine”. He was a participant in the Revolution of Dignity.

“The Maidan completed my transformation from a sofa patriot to an active patriot. I felt a personal responsibility for the country. I knew that I could not be mobilized because of my health, but I did not see myself on the sidelines. Only where the struggle continues. It was very easy not to go. It would only take less effort to find opportunities. But it is not so scary to risk losing your life, as to come to terms with the fact that you will lose yourself. The one you respect“, Maxim said.

Already in April 2014, he became a volunteer. He got into the 2nd volunteer battalion of operational assignment under the National Guard of Ukraine. Later, the two battalions were combined into one and it was named the Battalion of operational assignment named after the Hero of Ukraine Major General Serhiy Kulchytskyi.

After demobilization in 2016, Maxim returned to teaching, engaged in his own inventions and wrote his book “Good night“. This is a novel-diary about the war, which covers the time from the last days of the Revolution of Dignity at the end of February 2014 to the day he returned to the rotation – June 24 of the same year.

“The end of the Maidan. Formation of the second volunteer battalion of NSU. Battles near Sloviansk. Return to rotation. It’s all here. But the focus is somewhat different. Communication. Important as oxygen in the modern world. It was the correspondence that made it possible to reconstruct this story in detail. Former life. It is difficult to break away from it, but is it possible to return to it? Society. How does the fighter see him? Choice. What can a person do when his world is collapsing before his eyes? Everything is real here. Each step is experienced by the author and others“, says the annotation to the book.

As Petrenko said, he did not even think of being a writer, but the experience he had had did not leave him: “Flashbacks forced me to start writing. They threw me into a whirlpool of emotions. Time and time again I have seen the burst of a shell and felt the knocking impact. I felt like my subconscious was asking me to analyze this experience. Then a lot was put on it. The desire to perpetuate the memory of fallen brothers. I want to thank you for your support. The desire to show what it all meant to me. After all, the desire to stay in this world. At one point in the fight, I believed that I would not survive. The memories of that moment made me wonder if there would be anything I brought into this world if I were suddenly gone?“

In order to publish his own book, the writer learned to type and create layouts. He tried to make the text clear and understandable so that the readers could grasp the ideas he was putting in.

In June 2019, Maksym Petrenko presented his book in Slovyansk, at the opening of a memorial at the site of checkpoint No. 1, in the battles for which he himself participated.

With the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Maxim returned to the war again.

“In order for there not to be a void in your life, you need to do something important enough to make the future seem no less bright than the past.“, Maksym Petrenko said in an interview for Army Inform.

In the summer of 2022, he was declared missing.
