More than 40% of Ukrainian teenagers do not have a basic level of knowledge in mathematics and reading – research

Since 2018, Ukrainian 15-year-olds’ reading skills and knowledge of natural sciences have significantly deteriorated. 42% of students did not achieve even a basic level of literacy in mathematics.

This is stated in the PISA study of the quality of education, which was conducted from October 3 to 26, 2022.

Students’ awareness was divided into six levels, where 1 is the lowest and 6 is the highest.

According to the results, only 58% of Ukrainian students achieved basic level mathematical literacy, 59% – the basic level of reading literacy and 66% – the basic level of scientific literacy.

32% of teenagers have achieved level 3 or higher in mathematics, 29% in reading, 36% in natural sciences.

Only 13% of students in Ukraine have level 4 from mathematics, 8% from reading and 12% from natural sciences.

The most successful students who achieved 5 and 6 levelsturned out to be few: 3% from mathematics and 2% from reading and natural sciences.

Out of 1000 possible, the average score of 15-year-old Ukrainian students is:

  • in mathematics – 441;
  • from reading – 428;
  • from natural sciences – 450.

In addition, Ukrainian teachers more often than teachers from other countries reported the negative impact on learning of students’ actions.

In particular, 8.7% of students skipped school at least once for more than three months in a row. It happened more often in 5-9 grades.

Also, heads of educational institutions of educational institutions say that the most negative effect on the educational process is the inattention of students and the use of alcohol or drugs, which they resort to.

Among the analyzed countries, Ukraine surpassed only Georgia, Moldova and Bulgaria.

The study participants were 3,876 students aged 15 from 164 educational institutions in 18 regions of Ukraine: Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Sumy, Zhytomyr, Odesa, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, Lviv, Rivne, Ternopil, Volyn, Transcarpathian regions, as well as the city of Kyiv.

We will remind you that the study showed that 43% of parents are dissatisfied with the level of their children’s knowledge of the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian literature.
