Movies, books and You-Tube – how the consumption of art by Ukrainians changed during the full-scale war

A full-scale war has been going on in Ukraine for more than a year, which has affected all spheres of Ukrainian life. Ukrainians from different regions told about how the war changed cultural practices in a survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. The corresponding data were published in the analytical report of the Institute. A quarter (24%) of the respondents did not notice that the war affected their practices of cultural activity. The rest of the respondents reported that they had changed their preferences because of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Ukrainians began to consume more content in the state language, as well as to use new artistic practices. 56% started listening to more Ukrainian music over the last year; 22% began to read more books by Ukrainian authors; 3% started singing; 2% started drawing; 2% started writing their own poems or stories. In addition, according to the survey, the habits of Ukrainians in consuming cultural content have changed over the past year. In particular, a large part of the research participants now choose a Ukrainian product instead of a Russian one. Movies and TV series 42% started watching more Ukrainian movies / TV series; 46% partially or completely refused Russian films; 9% stopped watching altogether; 15% did not feel any changes. Music 53% started listening to Ukrainian music more; 41% partially or completely gave up Russian music; 6% stopped listening; 14% did not notice any changes. Books and periodicals 38% started reading more Ukrainian books; 31% refused Russian; 8% stopped reading; 28% did not change their behavior. You-Tube channels 39% began to consume more Ukrainian content; 31% gave up on Russian; 6% stopped consuming; 27% of changes were not observed. 34% of bloggers began to listen / read Ukrainian more; 26% stopped listening / reading Russian; 10% refused any; 30% consume as before. 35% of websites switched to Ukrainian sites; 27% no longer visit Russians; 8% stopped using this source; for 29% the situation has not changed. Three-quarters of respondents believe that the amount of Ukrainian cultural material has increased over the past year, and 84% noted an increase over the past year in interest in Ukrainian cultural material in Ukraine itself.
