55-year-old Mykhailo from Kherson miraculously survived after being shelled by the Russians: they fired 2 rockets into his house. In order to save the man’s life, doctors performed an extremely complicated operation, the First Medical Association of Lviv reported. Mykhailo was pulled out from under the rubble of the house by his younger son Andrii. He is now taking care of his father in the hospital. Surgeons performed more than 30 operations in half a year to stabilize the patient’s condition. However, the wound on the head remained dangerous: an infection could enter the brain through it. It had to be urgently closed with muscle tissue. But doctors in Ukraine have never had experience in performing such reconstructive operations. It was necessary to transplant muscle tissue from the back to the head. “The Canadians volunteered to help the Lviv residents, but it turned out that they are not ready to come to Ukraine, they are ready to go to Poland. So the Ukrainian doctors went there with the patient. The clinic in the Polish town of Chelyadz is 400 km from Lviv,” the clinic said. The road was not difficult for the patient. The operation lasted 12 hours and ended successfully. Doctors separated the flap of the widest muscle of the back and transplanted it to the exposed skull. Vessels, the size of a human hair, were stitched together under a microscope. A patient after a complex operation Mykhailo returned to Lviv within a week. “It is very gratifying to see that the patient, who was actually on the verge of death, gets back on his feet and can adapt normally socially,” says Hnat Gerych, head of surgery at the Nezlamni Center. The doctor notes that the muscle tissue has taken root. Physical therapists are currently working with the man, and he has several cosmetic operations on his face ahead of him. Before the war, Mykhailo worked as a musician at the Kherson House of Creativity. And doctors are optimistic that he will soon be able to return to music.
