The other day, the media reported on the presentation of the book “Battle for Irpin” by Pyotr Shcherbina at the Museum of History of Kyiv with reference to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. In her column for UP, journalist and teacher Iryna Fedoriv tells what is wrong with this book and its author. “I read media reports that political technologist Petro Shcherbina presented the book “Battle for Irpin”. She notes that Shcherbyna’s book was published as one of the winners of the contest of books for strengthening national unity, held by the International Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. In addition, the collection contains reviews of the events of Irpin by famous people in the world, a list of units that performed combat missions in district of the city of Irpin, as well as the heroes who gave their lives for Irpin are mentioned, their photos are posted,” says the description of the book on the website of the ICIP. In particular, the author collected the impressions of British Foreign Minister James Cleverley, New Zealand’s Defense Minister Pena Henare, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Japanese pianist Tempei Nakamura, Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Valdemaras Rupshis, and French documentary filmmaker Philippe Azoulet. All of them visited the city in October-November 2022, that is, about half a year after the release of Irpen. The book contains photos from Irpen, reviews of foreign guests, lists of fallen heroes. The other is the authorship of journalist and war correspondent Yevgenia Podhoya. “Podhonaya’s book should be printed in Ukrainian and English. And it cost taxpayers 2,000 copies (1,000 in English and 1,000 in Ukrainian) cheaper than the book on which Shcherbina will now promote herself together with the unscrupulous developers of Irpen” – she adds. Petro Shcherbina is the second person in the New Faces party. This is a local project of the green zone debunker and figure in anti-corruption cases of Ex-Mayor Irpen Volodymyr Karpluk”, – writes Fedoriv. “And after that Shcherbyn was allowed to publish his book with our budget money?” – the journalist asks a rhetorical question.
