The chairman of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov informed about the presentation of the award to the Ukrainian political prisoner and minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Lipavskyi.

“At the behest of the relatives of Nariman Dzhelal, who was imprisoned by the Russian invaders for 17 years and is currently being staged to Siberia, the award presented by the director of the human rights organization “Man in Trouble” Mr. Shimon Panek and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Jan Lipavsky, was accepted by lawyer Mykola Polozov”– noted Chubarov.

The commemorative sign of the award will be handed over to the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. There he will wait for the time when he can be handed over to Nariman Jelyal himself.

Lawyer Mykola Polozov said that the award, which was started by one of the oldest Czech human rights organizations, “Man in Trouble”, is awarded every year. Last year, its laureate was the Ukrainian human rights defender Maksym Butkevich, who is currently being held in Russian captivity.

What is known about the imprisonment of Nariman Jelal?

One of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar national movement, Nariman Dzhelal, was detained in Crimea in early September 2021. He and 4 other Crimean Tatars were accused of blowing up a section of the gas pipeline near the village of Perevalne, located between Simferopol and Yalta in the occupied Crimea.

According to the FSB, Nariman Dzhelyalov was an intermediary between the Ukrainian intelligence officers who organized the bombing and the Crimean brothers Akhtemov, who allegedly carried it out.

On September 21, 2022, the Russian-controlled Supreme Court of Crimea announced the verdict in the case. Nariman Dzhelyalov was sentenced to 17 years in a high-security prison.

At the end of October 2023, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets stated that the Crimean Tatar activist Nariman Dzhelal has not been in touch with his wife for several weeks. According to his information, Dzhelal was staged to Minusinsk in Eastern Siberia. Nothing is known about his health.

We will remind you that in September 2021, “Ukrainian Pravda” published the diary of prisoner Nariman Dzhelal.
