Neptune is a pale blue planet similar in color to Uranus.

This is evidenced by the results of a study by scientists from the University of Oxford and refutes the idea that Neptune has a deep blue hue, writes The Guardian.

New color images of Neptune indicate that it is similar in color to another ice giant, the planet Uranus. According to scientists, both are pale blue-green in color, but Neptune’s color is slightly “deeper.”

A study by scientists from Oxford refutes the popular belief that Neptune has a deep blue hue and proves that the two planets are similar in color.

It is noted that images taken by NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft during flybys in the 1980s created a false impression of the true color of the planets. Since the image of Neptune had a high level of contrast, it was mistakenly “painted” in dark blue.

In the conclusions of the study, its author Patrick Irwin suggested that the color of Neptune is more saturated than the color of Uranus, because one of the aerosol layers in its atmosphere is more transparent.

He explained that the color of the ice giants is due to the high content of methane in their atmosphere, a gas that absorbs green and red light.

Also during the study, scientists found out why Uranus changes color in different seasons: the planet looks greener in summer and winter, when its polar regions are directed towards the Earth and the Sun.

With the help of a computer model, the team concluded that this is due to the formation of a haze of frozen methane particles, which scatters light, above the pole facing the Sun.

We previously reported that a photographer from the United States created the clearest image of Jupiter.
