Ukrainian servicemen, who were released from Russian captivity, never once confirmed to the Office of the Ombudsman that they saw representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross during their stay in prison.

This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets told during a meeting with relatives of missing under special circumstances and captured servicemen of military units stationed in the Cherkasy region.

“During the exchanges, we survey those released from captivity and ask if they have seen representatives of the ICRC. And so far there has been no positive answer.”Lubinets said.

During the meeting, the ombudsman also explained to the relatives of the defenders that the status of missing does not mean that a person has died. According to him, very often missing persons are in captivity, but the ICRC cannot confirm this.

In addition, Dmytro Lubinets spoke about the work of the Coordination Staff on the Treatment of Prisoners of War and the ICRC’s access to Ukrainian prisoners of war who are in Russia or in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

We used to reportedwhich the International Red Cross provides with “human aid” to the occupiers in the Mariupol district.

“We have made visits to prisoners of war on both sides of the front line. Unfortunately, they are not regular and with incomplete access to all 100% of the people in captivity. We are in dialogue with both sides so that this access is granted to us.”– reported in the Office of the Ombudsman in a comment for “UP. Life”.
