After a large-scale fire, one of the most important monuments of France, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, is planned to open on December 8, 2024.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame was heavily damaged by fire in 2019. Currently, its collapsed spire is under restoration.

This process marks the finish line in the reconstruction of the Gothic cathedral. At the same time, the restoration of the interior of the landmark along the Seine River will not be finished before the start of the Olympics.

The pace of work almost coincides with French President Emmanuel Macron’s goal to open the cathedral in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics in and around Paris.

If everything goes according to plan, then by the end of the year, the installation of the frame of strong oak beams for the high spire will be completed. This stage, like reconstruction in general, is a big test for local craftsmen.

However, Philippe Jost, director of Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris, which oversees the project, is confident about the completion date.

The reconstruction of the sacred monument of Catholicism takes place with the assistance of financial contributions from billionaires, international donors and corporations. At the same time, disputes arose during the restoration.

At first, the architects strongly resisted Macron’s call for a creative and modern spire. It paid off – the spire is now an exact replica of the 1859 version by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The bends inside were also cleaned and brightened as part of the restoration.

Delays in the pace of recovery are also associated with long-term cleaning of lead residues after the fire. They created a risk of poisoning. In addition, they decided to conduct archaeological excavations inside the cathedral. In August, the operation was stopped due to the death of the general curator of the project, Jean-Louis Georgelin.

846 million euros were collected for the restoration of the cathedral. Benefactors from 150 countries of the world joined. But even in this case, everything did not go perfectly. Initially, the use of funds was not sufficiently transparent, and the organizers did not take care of proper control.

In order not to undermine the trust of the public, it was secured. At the same time, there is still the question of what to do with possible surplus funds. So far, restoration costs are predicted to be only 700 million euros.

At the same time, the investigation of the fire is ongoing. Reports so far point to lax security measures. Probably because of this, the contractors accidentally created a spark, which quickly burned the wooden beams of the 13th century.

Currently, the authorities promise that about 14 million expected visitors will not worry about their safety, because the cathedral will still be surrounded by scaffolding.

After the fire in Notre-Dame de Paris, the country paid more attention to other monuments across the country that are in dire need of repair: from castles in Burgundy to other cathedrals.

Earlier there was already information that the cathedral should be opened in 2024.
