In Odesa, the largest number of appeals regarding violations of language legislation in institutions of higher education were registered.
This was reported by Yaroslava Vitko-Prysiazhniuk, representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in the South of Ukraine, at a briefing.
“Since the beginning of the year, 11 measures of state control were carried out throughout Ukraine, which concerned institutions of higher education. 5 of them were in Odesa region. After that, we opened another measure of state control – we received an appeal with evidence regarding the use of the Russian language by scientific and pedagogical staff of higher education institutions education of Odesa”, – said the official.
As she noted, administrative protocols have already been drawn up for some violators.

“What is paradoxical: all these teachers with whom I spoke have an excellent command of the Ukrainian language. This level is sufficient to teach in it.
They often appeal to what students have asked, or what they have always taught. An interesting situation arises: some students ask to be explained to them in a non-state language, while other students record this in parallel and send an appeal.” – says Vitko-Prysiazhniuk.
According to her, most appeals are supported by evidence. Students submit video recordings of lectures held on online platforms.
At the same time, there were no reports about the anti-Ukrainian position of Odesa Odesa higher education employees.
In total, since January, Odesa Region has recorded 266 complaints about violations of language legislation.
“Most often, these appeals concerned the sphere of service, then – the language of Internet resources, then what else they pay attention to – the language of advertising and information for general familiarization (signs, announcements, etc.)” – says the representative of the language ombudsman.
According to her, Odesa ranks third in terms of the number of requests for violations of the language law. This rating is led by Kyiv, and in second place by Kharkiv.
As a reminder, since the beginning of 2023, 257 complaints about violations of language legislation in educational institutions have been registered.
