Russian propagandists often spread lies about “oppression and persecution” in Ukraine through the Russian language. In May, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology conducted a survey asking whether Ukrainians themselves see discrimination against Russian speakers in the state. Although the indicator has slightly decreased over the year, the absolute majority of Ukrainians (84%) still believe that there are no problems with the use of the Russian language in Ukraine and that Russian-speaking citizens are not oppressed and persecuted (in May 2022, this indicator was 93%). Only 8% of respondents believe that Russian-speaking citizens are systematically oppressed and persecuted. In May 2022, 5% of respondents thought so. In all regions of Ukraine, the absolute majority of the population, as in 2022, believes that there is no oppression and persecution of the Russian-speaking population. In particular, among residents of the east, 85% of respondents think so, and among residents of the south – 81%. Among those who communicate mainly or only in Russian at home, 81% believe that there is no oppression or persecution. Only 13% believe that such oppression occurs. Sociologists add that the sample included only 32 respondents out of 984 who identify themselves as Russians by nationality. This amount is not enough for statistically reliable calculations. However, it is telling that among them only 6 see oppression because of the Russian language, and 25 believe that there are no problems because of the Russian language. Currently, the absolute majority of Ukrainians, regardless of the region of origin, language of communication or nationality, believe that there are no problems with the use of the Russian language, says KMIS. At the same time, there are now a little fewer of those who are sure of this. We will remind you that over the last year, the number of people who speak Ukrainian and consider it their native language has increased in Ukraine. Also, 52% of Ukrainians expressed their opposition to children learning the Russian language in schools. But despite the war, almost 30% of Ukrainians continue to listen to Russian music. The survey was conducted from May 26 to June 5, 2023. 984 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and ORDLO) took part in it. The survey was conducted with adult citizens of Ukraine aged 18+ who, at the time of the survey, lived on the territory of Ukraine (within the limits controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022). and the survey was not conducted with citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022. Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 3.4% for indicators close to 50%, 3.0% for indicators close to 25%, 2.1% – for indicators close to 10%, 1.5% – for indicators close to 5%.
