On the night of March 10-11, Los Angeles hosted the world’s most prestigious film award ceremony – Oscar 2024.

The winner in the nomination Best Feature Documentary became a tape “20 days in Mariupol”. The documentary directed by Mstislav Chernov became the third Ukrainian film nominated for an American Film Academy Award in its 96 years of existence.

In addition to “20 days in Mariupol”, four more films were presented in this nomination: “Bobby Wine: The People’s President”, “Eternal Memory”, “Four Daughters” and “Kill the Tiger”.

The film “20 days in Mariupol” was created by director Mstislav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Maloletka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko. They were the last journalists to remain in Mariupol at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and recorded the beginning of the aggressor country’s destruction of the Ukrainian city. For this, they later received the Pulitzer Prize.

The documentary film was edited on the basis of materials that Chernov and a team of Associated Press photojournalists took in Mariupol besieged by the Russians and sent to the world media, telling about the terrible events in the city: the deaths of children and adults, the creation of mass graves, the maternity hospital destroyed by a Russian aerial bomb, and other Russian military events crimes

The tape became the highest-grossing documentary film in Ukraine last year – it collected UAH 500,000 in the first weekend of release alone.

On the eve of Oscar 2024, on March 9, Yevgena Maloletka, Mstislav Chernov and Vasylisa Stepanenko received the Shevchenko Prize for a series of journalistic materials about the siege of Mariupol. Among them are reports, photo and video reports, investigations and the film “20 days in Mariupol”.

Previously, Chernov’s film won the “British Oscar” award – the BAFTA film award and the Sundance Film Festival’s Audience Award. In addition, at the beginning of 2024, Mstislav Chernov was awarded the award of the Directors Guild of the USA for “outstanding directorial achievements in documentary cinema“.
