Parents and educators estimate the emotional state of students better than it actually is – research

Parents and educators estimate the emotional state of students better than it actually is.

Only 2-4% parents, teachers and representatives of the administration of educational institutions believe that students have more anxious or very anxious state. At the same time, among the students themselves, this indicator reached 12%.

This is evidenced by the results of the study “War and education. Two years of a full-scale invasion”, which was presented by the International Charitable Foundation savED in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

According to the results of the study, only 57-60% pupils, parents, teachers and representatives of the school administration believe that schoolchildren feel calm during the educational process. In particular, no more than a third say about “very calm feeling”. More 31-39% claim that schoolchildren equally often feel calm and anxious.

Parents assess children’s emotional state better than children themselves

Among the interviewed students 67% feel calm or very calm. However, the indicator for schoolgirls is much lower – 48%.

Apprenticeship in the western regions of Ukraine feels better emotionally 65%, against 54% from the central, northern and 52% from the frontline regions.

The study also says that parents assess their children’s emotional state better than the children themselves.

Yes, among male and female students only 37% had positive emotions during the last two weeks at the time of the survey.

At the same time, 51% of parents expressed the opinion that their children had only positive emotions/feelings during this period.

If we talk about specific emotions, the following are the most common among positive ones:

  • calmness (52% among students and 35% according to parents);
  • joy (46% and 39%);
  • optimism (41% and 42%);
  • confidence (39% and 33%);
  • satisfaction (33% and 31%);
  • inspiration (32% and 27%).

Psychological support for students

According to 26% of pupils (32% among girls and 20% among boys) and according to 23% of parents, male and female students rather or very much need psychological or emotional support. Of them, 4% and 2% speak with confidence about such a need, respectively. Another 36% and 49% say

that there is rather no need, although they see a certain benefit from it.

More 36% of girls and 49% boys say that there is no very strong need for psychological help.

Among parents who said that there is a rather present or very strong need for psychological help, 37% answered that their child already receives such support. However, the absolute majority of them mean relatives and friends, and not the involvement of a psychologist.

88% of representatives of the administration claim that their school has a psychologist. The same number of respondents say that any student can apply, and 73% say that any of the teachers can apply.
