Red Book hamsters are returning to the steppes of Odesa.
A group of red-book hamsters was brought to the region, which settled in the steppe of the landscape reserve “Tarutinsky Steppe” of the Bolgrad District. The animals were brought in by the team of Rewilding Ukraine and the Kyiv Zoo, the Odesa Regional Administration reports.
Hamsters were brought in to establish the basis of the population of the species in this area.
“Wild hamsters once inhabited the steppes and forest-steppes in most of the territory of Ukraine, but they have almost disappeared in nature”the department said.

The OVA noted that in the region they are working on the creation of a national nature park “Budjatsky Steppes”, which, together with other territories, is planned to include the landscape reserve “Tarutyn Steppe”, the botanical reserve “Staromanzyrsky”, the landscape reserves “Dibrova Mogilevska” and “Dibrova Manzyrska”. .
The government plans to bring back here animals that have disappeared due to human activity: kulan, European fallow deer, steppe marmot and hamster.
