The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has published the first images of the X-ray space telescope XRISM.

The images show the supernova remnant N123D and one galaxy cluster, Abell 2319, reported by JAXA.

As part of the mission, the XRISM telescope studies extreme phenomena in the universe: from intense flares from black holes to superheated gas clouds surrounding the galaxy. It is capable of taking photos in the X-ray spectrum.

XRISM is designed to detect powerful X-ray radiation with a voltage of up to 12 thousand electron volts. By comparison, visible light has an energy of only 2 to 3 electron volts.

So in image N123D Scientists have determined by the radiation spectrum that the remnant of a supernova contains silicon, sulfur, calcium, argon and iron.

This supernova is one of the brightest sources of X-ray radiation in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a companion galaxy to the Milky Way. It is located approximately 160 thousand light years from Earth.

These elements were created in the original star and then exploded when it exploded as a supernova. The Resolve tool will allow us to see the shapes of these lines in a way never before possible, allowing us to determine not only the large number of elements present, but also their temperatures, densities and directions of motion with unprecedented precision– said NASA XRISM project scientist Brian Williams.

He added that this way scientists will be able to get information about the original star and the explosion.

On another test image – the Abell 2319 cluster, the fifth brightest galaxy cluster in the sky. It is located at a distance of approximately 770 million light years. This cluster is almost 3 million light years across.

XRISM will provide the international scientific community with a new glimpse of the hidden X-ray sky. We will not only see X-ray images of these sources, but also study their composition, motion and physical state.”said Richard Kelly, principal investigator of XRISM in the United States.
