The “Trinity” icon of Andrey Rublev was officially handed over to the ROC for free use. The contract was signed on Wednesday by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and the Minister of Culture of Russia Olga Lyubimova. According to the terms of the agreement, the icon will be kept in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The term of the agreement is not specified.
At the same time, the official owner of the icon remains the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the icon continues to be part of the Museum Fund of Russia.
Patriarch Kirill called the signing of the agreement a “historical event.” “That terrible era has passed, when under the guise of confiscation of church values, the shrines of the Russian land were seized, and our people were left with the opportunity to offer their prayers in front of them,” he said.
Negotiations on the transfer of one of the most famous Old Russian icons from the Tretyakov Gallery to the Russian Orthodox Church intensified in May. It was reported that the corresponding order was given by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, but the text of the order was not published anywhere.
Art historians and restorers, including those working in the Tretyakov Gallery and taking part in the storage and restoration of the “Trinity”, spoke out strongly against such a step. According to them, the icon is in a dilapidated condition, and transportation and storage at the wrong temperature and humidity can lead to its irreparable destruction. However, on June 3, the “Trinity” was transported to the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, and then to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
In May, the participants of the meeting of the restoration commission in the Tretyakov Gallery stated that the transfer of the icon was impossible due to its unstable condition. After that, Patriarch Kirill removed from his post and banned the chairman of the ROC art council, archpriest Leonid Kalinin, who participated in the meeting and signed the protocol with the decision.
