Russia will not nominate its film for the Oscars again

In 2023, as in the past, Russia will not nominate a film for the Academy Award “Oscar”. This was reported to TASS by three former members of the Russian Oscar Committee.
According to one of them – producer Fyodor Popov, it would look extremely inappropriate to nominate a film for an American award when “Russia is surrounded by sanctions, and Russian culture, sports, and not only are subjected to persecution and bans.”
He also noted that the ranks of the nomination commission “were very thin, and its activity stopped.”
In 2022, the Russian Film Academy, under which the Oscar committee worked, decided not to nominate a Russian film for the Oscar. In response to this, the chairman of the committee, director Pavel Chukhrai, resigned from the committee. Most of the cinematographers followed him.
Before the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia annually nominated its films for the “Oscar” in the nomination “Best film in a foreign language”. They were repeatedly shortlisted by the academy, and Nikita Mikhalkov’s drama “Tired by the Sun” even won in 1994. In the history of Soviet cinema, the same award went to “War and Peace” by Sergei Bondarchuk, “Dersu Uzal” by Akira Kurosawa and “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” by Vladimir Menshov.
