Pictures taken from space show the Icelandic fishing town of Grindavik, literally on the edge of a lava flow.
The European Space Agency’s Sentinel2 satellite recorded the eruption of the Fagradalsfjatl volcano, located near the town of Grindavik.
On the morning of January 14, Fagradalsfjatl erupted for the second time in less than a month, writes Space.
Grindavik is located approximately 40 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik. As reported by The Guardian, mini-earthquakes often lead to evacuations in the city. The population of Grindavik is only 3,800 inhabitants, some of whom have already lost their homes.

In the European Space Agency they saythe accumulation of magma continues and there is a possibility that new fissures may “open without warning”.
The Icelandic Meteorological Service also reports that magma continues to accumulate beneath the earth’s surface as it did during previous eruptions.
“When a magma source forms near the surface, the earth’s crust is stretched and pushed up on either side of it, and the earth sinks over the center of the magma source“, the meteorological service notes.
It will be recalled that in November 2023, the Icelandic authorities declared a state of emergency after a series of powerful earthquakes shook the Reykjanes peninsula in the southwest of the country.
