In Ukraine, they plan to change the current legislation “On hunting and hunting” and ban the hunting and shooting of wolves.

Such measures are necessary to preserve these predators, of which, according to official data, there are about two thousand in Ukraine, Maryna Surkova, president of the Association of Animal Protection Organizations of Ukraine, said at a press conference of the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Surkova noted that the number of wolves has been decreasing sharply in recent years, so it is necessary to take measures to protect these animals.

“In 15 European countries, the wolf is listed in the Red Book and fully protected. In another five, it is partially protected and belongs to hunting species. And only in Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Belarus and North Macedonia is it destroyed as a pest”– says Marina.

According to her, it’s all about humanity and proper treatment of living nature.

Animal rights activist Maryna Surkova also notes that Ukraine violates the Berne Convention, which prohibits the hunting of wolves and the sale of their skins, and its conditions of ratification. According to her, the wolf was included in the list of animals that must be strictly protected.

Instead, Article 33 of the Law of Ukraine “On Hunting and Hunting” states that the shooting and trapping of wolves is carried out by hunters without any control or restrictions.

“Hunting and hunting are shameful activities. It can be compared to serial killers who kill the weak. The only question is how long society will tolerate such a thing.” Maryna Surkova stressed.

The lawyer of the URSA animal protection organization Maryna Ivanyusko said that they are already preparing draft laws to regulate the issue of wild animal protection. Namely, they propose to make changes to the current law “On Hunting and Hunting”, as well as to provide responsibility for those who will shoot.

According to Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, the first deputy minister of environmental protection and natural resources, today the urgent issue of animal preservation has arisen, especially in the conditions of a full-scale war.

“There is a list of animals that are classified as pests. However, this is not correct. To judge who is harmful and who is not is a Soviet thing. We are working to preserve biodiversity in Ukraine, because every organism is important for the world.”Oleksandr Krasnolutsky noted.

Volodymyr Boreyko, director of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center, says that wolves are not pests, but on the contrary, they benefit nature. They destroy sick animals, hunt rodents and do not pose a threat to humans, and compared to other animals, they are less likely to get rabies.

Earlier we wrote that in the Kyiv region police officers rescued a lynx listed in the Red Book. They tried to sell the rare animal.
