The drug, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes, slows the progression of Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

This is stated in the study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, writes The Guardian.

Scientists in France conducted an experiment in which 156 people with newly diagnosed Parkinson’s disease took part.

They were divided into two groups: one received Parkinson’s medication and a placebo, and the other received a daily injection of a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes instead of a placebo.

Before, during and after the experiment, scientists checked the mobility and balance of the participants. In accordance with these data, specialists gave an assessment of the patients’ condition.

In the participants of the group who received anti-diabetic drugs, even after 12 months, no progression of motor problems was observed. And in patients from the group that used a placebo, the condition worsened.

The difference persisted two months after the termination of the experiment and therapy.

According to the researchers, this means that the diabetes drug not only reduces symptoms, but also protects the brain from the loss of neurons.

However, there was a downside: About half of the participants who received the drug experienced nausea, and 13% reported vomiting.

We will remind, earlier scientists declaredthat 43% of the world’s population suffers from neurological diseases.
