Scientists have discovered two new side effects from the vaccine against COVID-19 – a neurological disorder and inflammation of the spinal cord.

Both side effects are extremely rare. This is stated in the results of a study published in the journal Vaccine, writes The Guardian.

Researchers working as part of the Global Vaccine Data Network analyzed the electronic health records of more than 99 million people from Australia, Argentina, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, New Zealand and Scotland.

It is said to be the largest vaccine safety study to date.

Scientists compared the incidence of 13 brain, blood and heart diseases in people after they received the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine with the likelihood of developing the corresponding diseases before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The study confirmed the link between the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines with the rare side effects of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, a swelling of the outer lining of the heart.

At the same time, a rare side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine is acute diffuse encephalomyelitis – inflammation and swelling of the brain and spinal cord.

According to scientists, the risk of developing this side effect is 0.78 cases for every million doses.

Scientists also discovered a link between the vaccine and Guillain-Barré syndrome and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, a type of blood clot in the brain.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, which can cause pain, numbness and muscle weakness, progressing to paralysis in the most severe cases.

Most people recover completely from the disorder.

As co-director of the Global Vaccine Data Network Jim Battery said, after receiving the results, scientists decided to conduct a second study, analyzing a separate set of data on 6.8 million Australians who received the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“It is impossible to detect rare side effects until millions of people use the vaccine. No clinical trial can be that large.”– said Bateri.

University of Sydney vaccine expert Julie Leask added that infection with COVID-19 increases the risk of some of these rare conditions “much more than the vaccine”.

Previously, we talked about what is known about the side effects of the vaccine against COVID-19 and how serious they are.
