Scientists from the United Arab Emirates “taught” artificial intelligence to convincingly imitate human handwriting. For this he needs only a few handwritten paragraphs.
Currently, the AI is showing success in working with English and French languages. However, there are difficulties with Arabic, according to Bloomberg.
For the new technology, researchers at the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi used a transformer model, a type of neural network designed to learn the context and meaning of sequential data.
“The potential of this development is huge – from deciphering doctors’ handwriting to creating personalized advertising,” – said one of the developers, Rao Muhammad Anwar.

Also, this development can help people with hand injuries to write. In addition, it can be used to generate large amounts of synthetic data to improve the performance of other AI handwriting recognition models.
At the same time, the new technology can become the cause of massive forgeries of handwriting.
“We will have to raise public awareness and develop tools to fight counterfeiting. It’s like developing an anti-virus for a virus.” – said developer Hisham Cholakkal.
So far, the researchers have received a patent in the United States. It is planned to launch the technology in the next few months.
It will be recalled that research has shown that AI is worse at recognizing grammatical errors than humans.
