“Scythian gold” returned to Ukraine – National Museum of History

Artifacts from four museums of Crimea, which were presented at the exhibition “Crimea: Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea”, were transferred from the Netherlands to Ukraine, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine said in a statement.
The “Scythian gold” was returned after ten years of legal proceedings in the Netherlands, the museum says.
The Allard Pearson Museum transferred the exhibits to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, where they will be kept until the deoccupation of Crimea.
“Currently, specialists are examining the condition of these things. “We are talking about 565 objects, in particular, ancient sculptures, Scythian and Sarmatian jewelry, Chinese lacquer caskets, which are two thousand years old,” the message reads.
General Director of the National History Museum of Ukraine Fedir Androschuk noted: “During the legal disputes, our museum was designated as a storage place for the collections of Crimean museums. This means that the museum will make every effort to preserve them and for citizens and guests of Ukraine to be able to see them.”
In June, MKIP reported that Ukraine was negotiating for the Netherlands to return the “Scythian gold” free of charge.
On June 9, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands upheld the decision of the lower courts to return the “Scythian gold” to Ukraine. The artifacts were displayed in a museum in the Netherlands at the time Russia was occupying Crimea, and both the state of Ukraine and museums in Crimea demanded their return.
On October 26, 2021, the Court of Appeal of Amsterdam decided to transfer the so-called “Scythian gold” to Ukraine. The case concerned more than 565 objects from the museum fund of Ukraine, which are located on the territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These are mostly archaeological finds, the value of the collection is about 10 million euros.
However, Russia sent a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands against the decision to return the collection of “Scythian gold” to Ukraine.
