In Odessa, it is proposed to demolish six Soviet and imperial monuments. At the same time, they only want to remove the word “Russian” from the plates for three, and to leave the monuments to Pushkin and Vorontsov altogether – they supposedly represent an exceptional artistic value.

This was reported by the local publication “Dumska”.

On November 9, the Odesa Historical Toponymic Commission will consider the fate of monuments of the Soviet and imperial eras. At the last meeting, we did not have time to consider these issues, so the discussion was scheduled for this Thursday.

In particular, six monuments are planned to be dismantled or moved to another place. These are monuments to Leo Tolstoy on the square of the same name, to his descendants on Mytnaya Square, to the head of the executive committee of the Odesa Provincial Council Andrii Ivanov at the hardware factory, to Valery Chkalov and Felix Dzerzhynskyi in sanatoriums on French Boulevard, and to Ivan Chernyakhovskyi on Tinistoi Street. It is not yet known where exactly they will be transferred.

The content of the plaques on three monuments will be changed – the word “Russian” will be removed. They plan to do this on a pedestal with a bust of the Russian physicist and radio engineer Alexander Popov in the courtyard of the former Communications Academy, busts of the Russian mathematician and mechanic, academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Alexander Lyapunov in the university courtyard on Pasteur, and Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov in the “Arkadia” sanatorium.

They plan not to touch the monument to Alexander Pushkin on Duma Square and Mykhailo Vorontsov on Sobornaya. According to the commission, they are of exceptional artistic value.

In addition, all imperial symbols will be removed from the Alexander Column in Shevchenko Park. After that, it will be called “Memorial column in honor of the foundation of the park (arch. Bruni A.K.)”.

Unfortunately, the image of the Order of Lenin on April 10 Square was not included in this list. I wrote a letter to the Department of Culture with a proposal to discuss the dismantling of these orders at the next meeting of the commission. This question worries many Odessans, several times these portraits of Lenin have been smeared with paint“, said Petro Obukhov, one of the members of the commission.

How Kateryna was cleaned in Odessa

In September 2022, activists twice doused the monument to Catherine II with red paint, demanding its dismantling. Before that, the inscription “Kateryna=Putin” appeared on the pedestal in red paint. In November, a red cap was put on the head of the monument to the Russian empress, and a rope with a loop for hanging was placed in the hand.

On November 30, the Odesa City Council finally decided to dismantle the monument to the Founders of Odesa, which also includes a statue of the Russian empress Catherine II.

A month later, on December 28, communal workers dismantled the monument to the Founders of Odesa, part of which was a statue of the Russian empress Catherine II.

At the beginning of 2023, the monument to Catherine II, which was dismantled on Catherine Square, was accepted for one-year preservation by the Odessa Art Museum.
