Serbian miners found an ancient Roman ship

A miner in Serbia, working in a large coal mine, came across wood. Archaeologists arrived at the scene, who knew that the Roman settlement of Viminatsium had once been there. After clearing the sand and soil from the ancient wooden structure, the researchers discovered a gigantic 13-meter long ship, reports Reuters. Probably, the found vessel could be part of the river fleet that served the extensive and highly developed Roman city with a population of about 45 thousand people. There could be a hippodrome, a palace, temples, an amphitheater, baths, workshops, etc. This is the second such find in this area. The first was discovered in 2020. Excavations of Viminacium have been ongoing since 1882, but archaeologists have explored only 5% of the site. According to them, the territory of the ancient settlement is 450 hectares, which is more than the Central Park of New York.
