The Security Service of Ukraine does not give permission to acting the director of the Holodomor Museum, Lesya Hasydzhak, to get acquainted with research materials on the number of Holodomor victims, because the museum is not a party to the criminal proceedings for which these examinations were conducted. This is stated in the response of the Department of Interaction with the Mass Media and the Public of the SBU to the request of UP.Kultur. In an interview with UP.Kultura, Lesya Hasidzhak previously said that the Security Service refuses to provide access to the working materials that became the basis for the scandalous study published in 2021. The response of the SBU stated that the main investigative department of the Service is conducting a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings on the fact that the communist totalitarian regime in Ukraine organized an artificial famine in 1932-1933. “This is a very large-scale and extensive matter that requires careful study, analysis and research, in particular, and a large volume of archival data,” the SBU added. They continued that for the sake of a comprehensive investigation, investigators “initiated 7 examinations conducted by independent specialists” – all of them have now been completed. And they added that experts from the Holodomor Museum were involved in part of the research. According to the SBU, museum workers worked on the materials provided by the Service for more than a year. “Their conclusions are included in the criminal proceedings. At the same time, considerable fragments of these conclusions were published by their authors in the form of scientific papers and are publicly available,” the answer reads. The scandalous study was published by a separate publication, but there is not a single copy in the Holodomor Museum at the moment. It was noted there that “the museum institution is not a party in this criminal proceeding,” so “the applicant was informed that there were no grounds for such an acquaintance.” “According to the requirements of Article 222 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, the information of the pre-trial investigation can be disclosed only with the written permission of the investigator or prosecutor and to the extent that they consider possible,” the SBU added. In addition, the Security Service confirmed that they received an appeal regarding “the legality of expert studies and conducting repeated examinations to determine the number of victims of the Holodomor in 1932-1933.” “The SBU is engaged in collecting the evidence base, and only the court is authorized to assess the legality of the examinations and the collected evidence in a specific case”, – they relayed their response to the appeal of Lesya Hasidzhak to the SBU. Finally, in response to our request, the Security Service of Ukraine stated that they are ready to add new data to the proceedings regarding the circumstances and number of victims of the Holodomor, if such information was discovered by the museum’s specialists. What did the head of the Holodomor Museum say? Lesya Hasydzhak said that when she was appointed acting director of the Holodomor Museum, she immediately tried to find out from the museum scientists how the calculations were made. “Everyone blinked their eyes and said that this study was not conducted by the museum, but by the Security Service of Ukraine, and they acted only as experts in their free time,” she said. Hasidzhak specified that she had written “already about six letters” to the SBU with a request to provide access to the materials. “Every time there is a refusal saying that this is confidential information, it cannot be made public and so on,” the head of the museum clarified. About the scandalous study with a new number of victims of the Holodomor In September 2021 in Kyiv, at the International Forum “Mass Artificial Famines: We Remember, We Commemorate”, a study was presented with a new number of victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 – 10.5 million Ukrainians. These numbers were presented by Olesya Stasyuk, then director of the National Holodomor Museum, and Mykola Gerasimenko, ex-deputy head of the SBU. Stasiuk and Gerasimenko also published the materials of this study in a separate book for the forum – “Genocide of Ukrainians 1932-1933 based on the materials of pre-trial investigations”. On December 1, the Open Letter of scientists and the public regarding falsifications in the field of research and dissemination of information about the Holodomor-genocide of the Ukrainian people was published. In June 2022, director Olesya Stasiuk was fired, accused of plagiarism and incompetence. Since then, the Holodomor Museum has distanced itself from the scandalous study and relies on the most reliable number of victims, calculated by the M. V. Ptukh Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which is 3.9 million people.
