The rector of the Lviv National Medical University named after Danylo Halytskyi, 83-year-old Borys Zimenkovskiy, made sexist jokes and made fun of students’ surnames during the distribution of graduates for internships. This is reported by university students. The behavior of the head of the university caused indignation among students and doctors. “Distribution is one of the key moments in the career of a future doctor, when his specialty is determined after 6 years of study,” writes doctor Roman Shtibel. Medic shared fragments of distribution records. On one of them, the university rector makes fun of the student’s last name: “Wolkodav. Oh, and the last name. With that last name, and for children…” Another member of the commission replies: “But she will get married!”, to which the rector replies: “But I’m joking! ” The second episode concerns a student who confirms her desire to become a surgeon. “A woman wants to kill! It’s sad. I wouldn’t want to know that,” says the rector. “And if the fish were stuffed?” – answers someone from the board. “What if I get stabbed at night?” – continues the rector. To another student’s question about what to do with specialization, the rector says: “Hang!” In addition, students have complaints about the distribution itself, which was carried out at the university. Student Maria Hryshchuk draws attention to the sudden appearance and disappearance of internship places and the untimely delivery of information to graduates, as well as to the failure of the higher education management to comply with the orders of the Ministry of Health. Also, according to the student, during the distribution committee, students were not allowed to ask questions, and the microphones were turned off. The history of distribution at the Lviv Medical University became the reason for discussions about the quality of Ukrainian medical education. Some doctors believe that medical education in its current form is unnecessary, and that even if medical universities do not graduate students for several years, nothing will change. “Sexism, ridicule of surnames, stupid jokes and all the best that a national university can demonstrate in an effort to confirm the title of “absolutely unnecessary institution. The university honestly demonstrates to students that they are just serfs who don’t need respect,” writes doctor Ivan Chernenko. Doctor Oleksandra Nemensha also writes about unfair distribution, changing rating rules on the fly, the appearance of new places and the disappearance of old ones, and sexist jokes. “The country is oversaturated by doctors and institutions that produce them. I am sure that if all the medical universities of Ukraine suddenly stop recruiting students for the next twenty years, nothing will change,” the doctor writes. “UP.Zhyttia” asked the Lviv Medical University for comments on the situation and is waiting for a response.
