Ukrainian writer Sofia Andruhovych became the laureate of this year’s Sholom Aleichem Prize. The winner was chosen from among 15 candidates. Andruhovych’s victory became known at the meeting of the committee on awarding the prize, which took place on Thursday, February 17, the Ukrainian Book Institute reported on Facebook. The writer was awarded for the novel “Amadoka”, published by the Stary Lev Publishing House in 2020. Lyudmila Taran was also awarded honorary degrees for her novel “Ivenko, or Men are…” (Stary Lev Publishing House, 2021) and Oleksandr Averbukh for his poetry collection “The Jewish King” (Spirit and Litera 2021). The novel “Amadoka” covers three periods of Ukraine’s history: the first decades of the 20th century, the Holocaust in the western regions of the country during the Second World War, and today’s war with Russia in the east. The author calls it “a subjective cast of Ukrainian history of the 20th century.” “Amadoka” is the name of a lake on the territory of present-day Ukraine, which is found in the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. Andruhovych used the name of the reservoir as a metaphor for white spots in Ukrainians’ perceptions of themselves. Sofia Andruhovych.
