Ukrainian writer Sofia Andruhovych became the laureate of this year’s Sholom Aleichem Prize. The winner was chosen from among 15 candidates. Andruhovych’s victory became known at the meeting of the committee on awarding the prize, which took place on Thursday, February 17, the Ukrainian Book Institute reported on Facebook. The writer was awarded for the novel “Amadoka”, published by the Stary Lev Publishing House in 2020. Lyudmila Taran was also awarded honorary degrees for her novel “Ivenko, or Men are…” (Stary Lev Publishing House, 2021) and Oleksandr Averbukh for his poetry collection “The Jewish King” (Spirit and Litera 2021). The novel “Amadoka” covers three periods of Ukraine’s history: the first decades of the 20th century, the Holocaust in the western regions of the country during the Second World War, and today’s war with Russia in the east. The author calls it “a subjective cast of Ukrainian history of the 20th century.” “Amadoka” is the name of a lake on the territory of present-day Ukraine, which is found in the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. Photo: Ukrainian Motion Picture Association This year, 15 candidates applied for the Sholom-Aleichem Award: Oleksandr Averbukh, Sofiya Andruhovych, Hlib Vysheslavskyi, Mykola Gomanyuk, Tetiana Hrytsan-Chonka, Yuliya Zhuravkova, Maksym Ivanov, Leonid Leiderman, Serhiy Martynyuk, Andriy Pavlyshyn, Zoya Ruzhyn, Serhiy Stelmakh, Lyudmila Taran, Anna Shaulska and the team of authors Nataliya Volotovska, Olena Skulovatova, Oksana Kuriyoki, Inna Kurylo, Hanna Dolzhek and others. The Sholom Aleichem Prize is awarded every year in March on Sholom Aleichem’s birthday. It honors Ukrainian writers, translators, screenwriters, and dramatists for literary and artistic works that popularize the spiritual and cultural assets of the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples and contribute to the spread of a positive image of Ukraine in the world. New works published within the last three years, but no later than a month before their nomination, can be nominated for the award. The monetary reward for the award is 20,000 hryvnias. In previous years, Hryhoriy Falkovich (2012), Valeriya Boguslavska (2014), Marianna Kiyanovska (2018), Oleksandra Uralova (2022) became laureates of the award.
