The court decided not to confiscate the turtles, which the owner kept in terrible conditions during the traveling exhibition in Khmelnytskyi.

The Kamianets-Podilskyi City District Court noted that a “Solomon decision” was made: to punish the owner for holding an illegal exhibition with a maximum fine of 850 hryvnias, but not to confiscate the animals themselves.

“The court did not apply the confiscation of the objects of the animal world, because information about other proper, safe, with observance of the temperature regime and nutritional features of the place of reptiles was not provided to the court in the manner determined by the law.

The city does not have a specialized institution and specialists in the relevant field for the care and maintenance of turtles,” – noted in court.

Animal rights activists UAnimals, which filed a complaint with the police because of the exhibit, say they offered to buy aquariums and other equipment for the turtles during the temporary removal, but the police refused this offer.

“We gave the police contacts of specialists who could advise on the care of the turtles. We also suggested several places where the turtles could be moved, and we do not know why the court did not take this into account.”the organization claims.

UAnimals believes that the punishment for the illegal exploitation of animals should be more severe.

“It should be prohibited not only the exhibitions themselves, but also the ownership of exotic animals in general, except for justified exceptions.” – they say in the organization.
