The entrepreneur moved plywood production from Bakhmut and created 140 jobs

Mr. Jachunskas Svayunas is now known almost all of Chernihiv Oblast, and the company “Chernihiv-Plywood” LLC, which he created in the village of Sahutivka, near the city of Koryukivka, is a business card of the area and provides jobs to the people of Koryukivka. Now, few people in the district remember that Mr. Svayunas was actually an IDP 9 years ago. An ethnic Lithuanian, he lived in Donetsk region, where he made furniture and accessories for a long time. The business developed successfully, the entrepreneur had sales markets on the territory of Ukraine and in European countries. When, in 2014, part of Donetsk region was criminally occupied by the Russian Federation, Mr. Svayunas decided to move his life’s work to Chernihiv region and revive the factory there.

At that time, the businessman had already agreed on a new place for business – in the village of Sakhutivka, near Koryukivka. The company managed to evacuate after the liberation of the city of Sloviansk.

“On July 5 (the day of the liberation of the city of Slovyansk. – ed.), I was driving from Bakhmut to Donetsk, I even got into a convoy and stood in a “live chain”, because a bandit army was advancing towards the city. While I was driving with them from Kostyantynivka to Donetsk , then I immediately thought to turn aside, but no – they immediately pointed a machine gun at me and said: you are only going with us. When we arrived in Donetsk, my family and I immediately decided that we needed to leave urgently,” says Mr. Svayunas.

“Chernigiv-Plywood” LLC started working already in 2015. At first, local residents who came to work were trained by craftsmen who left with Mr. Svayunas.

“For the first time, craftsmen helped train people, because it was necessary to train at least 70 specialists at once. Here, for example, there were no specialists in such a profession as “skinners”. They are not taught in vocational schools or in technical schools. Carpenters are trained there, but peelers – no. When the first team was trained and the craftsmen went home to their families, I already trained my specialists myself. Now the enterprise employs 140 people,” the businessman says.

He says that he loved the new place from the first days, even before the plant was launched. The entrepreneur calls the local residents “unbelievable” and has been telling the same revealing story about them for 9 years.

“I have never seen anything like it here. In 2014, we brought 35 machines of equipment – only one car was shot on the way to us, and that was almost the whole thing. They unloaded everything and put it around the house, and there was just a field, there was not even a fence. And what amazed me beyond measure is that when I put the plant back together, it turned out that, roughly speaking, not a single bolt had disappeared, although everything was lying in the open – without protection, – says the entrepreneur.

He shares that he has only had support and approval from the local community for all 9 years of living together.

As a member of the community, the businessman helps new arrivals who left dangerous regions after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. Most of the displaced people find work in his factory.

“There was a family from Sloviansk, Odesa, Mykolaiv region – then they left to live with relatives in Ivano-Frankivsk region. All the migrants work – we found them all jobs. We have a family that moved from the very border with the Russian Federation, from the village of Klyusy. The man went to work as a farmer at the agricultural enterprise, and the woman came to us. The same is the case with the Odessa family: the woman works in the store, and the man works with us. We definitely give more work as soon as possible, even create new ones jobs so that everyone can earn a living,” says the business owner.

Now he takes an active part in the social and cultural life of the community, to which he attracts both locals and newcomers. As a donor, he contributed to equipping the local club “Kub” in Koryukivka, which helps organize local holidays, and the surrounding area. In addition to financial assistance, the entrepreneur plans to introduce the locals to Lithuanian cuisine.

“On Koryukivka Day, a real gastrofestival is held here. When I first came to the celebration, I was very surprised by the local dish – stewed pickled cucumbers with meat. A very interesting dish. Since then, I plan to also prepare Lithuanian delicacies from our family. In the first years, they made barbecues, it seemed , that everything is ahead. But, unfortunately, a full-scale war has greatly canceled everything. But there are plans, there are many of them, so we are waiting for the Victory to move forward,” says Jachunskas Svayunas.

According to the BF “Right to Defense”, after the de-occupation of the Chernihiv region, the entrepreneur organized trips to Chernihiv every Saturday to clear rubble. He also takes care of homeless animals that are constantly dumped on the road near his production, bought an old bus at the price of scrap metal, restored it and provides it free of charge for the needs of the community. In addition, as of today, he actively supports his mobilized employees and residents of the community, constantly sending the necessary help to the front, in particular, more than one drone was purchased.
